Department SummaryAdvanced Research Computing melds expert staff and technical infrastructure to amplify and accelerate the impact of UCLA research in the age of networked data and computation. OARC supports and enhances the university mission of education, research, and service through the development and execution of innovative and sustainable technology practices, programs, services, infrastructure, policies, and partnerships.Position SummaryThe Office of Advanced Research Computing's Research Technology Group (RTG) seeks a Digital Research Consultant to join a team of highly-trained technologists working directly with UCLA faculty to support digitally enabled research. The Digital Research Consultant provides expertise, resources, and recommendations to advance digital research initiatives by investigating and implementing new technologies, and collaborating with researchers across campus. This position works with other faculty-facing technologists in the RTG to support a community of faculty and researchers engaged in diverse research activities across UCLA's schools, divisions and disciplines. Under supervision from RTG leadership and in coordination with RTG colleagues, the Digital Research Consultant will advance the University, department, and group missions to position UCLA as a world leader in digital research and education.The ideal candidate would have a Ph.D. or Master's Degree in bioinformatics, computer science, natural sciences, engineering, statistics, mathematics, humanities, or social sciences, plus a minimum of five years of experience utilizing cutting-edge technologies. Commensurate work experience would be considered. Expertise desired in one or more of the following areas: data science, advanced statistics, data visualization, advanced research computing, programming, MPI, Bayesian modeling, predictive modeling, data mining, data collection, machine learning, UX, and graphic design. The position also requires excellent oral and written communication skills, and a commitment to serving the diverse and inclusive educational environment at UCLA. Specifically, this position will:

  • Engage with faculty and researchers to address research needs across the research lifecycle.
  • Develop research facilitation and instruction services, programs, and workshops that promote, support, and inspire digital research methods.
  • Cultivate and document short- and long-term goals to achieving the envisioned services and programs.
  • Provide strategic planning and practical decision-making for the technical infrastructure of digital projects in support of both teaching and research across the campus.
  • Explore innovative uses of digital data, especially in conjunction with large, convergence research and inter- and transdisciplinary endeavors.
  • Advise individuals, groups, and departments on the use, processing, and analysis of digital data.
  • Collaborate with other campus departments, UC colleagues, and representatives from peer institutions on shared initiatives.Salary & Compensation*UCLA provides a full pay range.   • Extensive knowledge of relevant methods, theories, and software in field of expertise that can be applied to interdisciplinary research problems. (Required)
  • Ability to work with researchers to solve problems in their area(s) of expertise, or help them locate solutions with other campus research support units. (Required)

  • Ability to initiate, foster, and maintain collaborative working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and managers in a team-based environment. (Required)

  • Experience working with faculty and/or principal investigators in higher education. (Preferred)
  • Experience with multiple technologies, methods, and software packages as relevant to the incumbent's area(s) of expertise (e.g., Python, R, Machine Learning, SQL, MySQL, JavaScript, Tableau, MPI, Bayesian modeling, predictive modeling, data mining, and artificial intelligence.) (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated teaching experience. (Preferred)
  • Experience with data visualization tools relative to the incumbent's area(s) of expertise. (Preferred)
  • Fluency in best practices for the preservation and enduring utility of digital research resources. (Preferred)Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
